Alpine Adventure: Engstligenalp
A couple of friends, a rucksack packed with essentials, and a Soft White to enjoy on the summit. Sometimes, all you need is a cable car, some touring skis, and a bit of vegan cheese in your pack to turn a regular day into a true alpine adventure!
Join us on this ski tour on one of our favorite routes in Engstligenalp!

Breathtaking
Engstligenalp offers a breathtaking winter playground with ski tours, snowshoe hikes, and cross-country skiing, inviting adventurers of all levels to explore its stunning alpine landscapes. And it’s not far from where New Roots originated, in the beautiful Berner Oberland!
Obviously a Soft White
Before you leave the house, don’t forget to pack the essentials. Here is an exhaustive list of what we packed: boots, skis, skins, ski crampons, probe, transceiver, shovel, helmet, hat, gloves, poles, sunglasses, suncream, water, snacks—and obviously a Soft White.
Personally, we like starting every tour with public transport, so we took a train to Adelboden and then a bus to Unter dem Birg. If you’re using public transport, make sure to check your connections for the way back too, the buses tend to get a little rarer in the late afternoon. Starting early is always smart!

Off to the summit
To begin the tour, take the Engstligenalp cable car up to the stunning high-altitude plateau. Once you step out of the station, put your skins on and traverse the long flat in the direction of Ammertenspitz. You’ll basically be able to see the peak from the very start of the tour, which is always exciting—and a good source of motivation, as far as we’re concerned.
It gets steep...
The long approach before it starts getting steep feels like a true winter wonderland: a sprawling landscape of quietness and fluffy white snow. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a Rock ptarmigan or even a bearded vulture!
After that, get ready: it gets steep! You’re going to climb about 500m of elevation gain before you reach the Ammertenpass. From there, follow the ridge leading up to the summit. Congrats, you made it! Don’t forget the mandatory summit selfie, and to enjoy the views on both the Berner Oberland and the Wallis.
Descend following the same route, have fun—and be safe!
